The COVID-19 pandemic has affected nearly everyone in some way. Especially parents with young children. Parents now have to take on the responsibility of not only having their children at home all the time but also having to take on the role of teacher. This is a huge change for the majority of children, and obviously, many of them want to know why all of this is happening.
Explaining the current world situation to a child is a difficult task for many parents. Understanding this, the award-winning, McKinney, TX, Heritage Learning Center staff would like to help parents in any way possible. So, here are a few tips that we have on discussing the current situation with young children.
Be honest:
Obviously, the age of your child depends on how much you tell them, but it is important that you are still honest. Make sure you help separate the truth from rumors on social media or other sources.
Be comforting:
Children can tell when you’re worried. Because of this, it is important to remain calm, even while expressing the importance of the situation. One thing that you discuss with kids if they express fear of getting seriously ill, is that children do not seem to get nearly as sick as adults.
Teach your children the importance of following national guidelines:
While kids may not understand why staying home is helping the situation, it is important that they understand the importance of it, and that it is the best thing we can do to solve the problem.
Watch where they are getting information:
This one is very important. There is a lot of misinformation out there. Make sure that you are able to explain to them that not every story they see is true.
Check on them:
Make sure you check up on your kids from time to time. Sure, you might be around them all the time, and while they might seem ok it is important to ask to be sure. It is important for you to give them the opportunity to talk through these events.
