Fine motor skills involve using the smaller muscles in your hands to move, manipulate, or make things! It’s great for kids to develop their fine motor skills in many different ways with different activities. That’s why Heritage Learning Center has come up with 5 different activities for you to put together for your children to develop these skills.

1. Playdough

Playdough is commonly used for sensory play, but it’s perfect for fine motor skills too! Encourage your kids to pinch, squeeze, and roll the dough into different shapes. You can also help them cut shapes using scissors.

2. Sponges

Using sponges for fine motor skills is easy and cheap! All you need are two bowls and a sponge. Believe it or not, your child will have plenty of fun squeezing water into the sponge from one bowl and putting it in the other.

3. Rice Races

Rice races are a fun and easy way to get involved in these activities with your kids. Each person gets two bowls. One is filled with rice and the other is empty. You each get a pair of tweezers and race to see who can fill their empty bowl the fastest! O-shaped cereal is a good alternative if rice is too small.

4. Water Experiments

Similar to the other activities, you’ll need an empty cup and another filled about a quarter of the way. Give your child an eyedropper or clean medical syringe and have them collect the water into the dropper or the syringe and squirt it into the empty cup. Using food coloring in the water can make this a great color-making activity as well!

5. Gardening

If you’re a gardener, you can help develop your child’s fine motor skills while they help you garden! Simple activities like transferring seedlings to a plant and using shovels to dig are perfect!
