The key to education is motivation, so in order for pre-schoolers to keep learning, they need to be motivated to do so. So, what if they’re bored and uninterested in what they’re supposed to be learning? What are you supposed to do then? Well, that’s what Heritage Learning Center is here for. We want to teach you different motivational techniques to use at home or in the classroom for preschool-age children.

Spark Their Curiosity

Curiosity is a great way to motivate preschoolers because if they’re curious then they want to learn and find answers to what they’re curious about. Consider putting objects in fun containers to interest them in finding out what’s inside! Another option is providing mystery objects that they’ll want to explore. Hide objects in boxes or bags or use exciting, messy play substances. These are all ways that you can spark a preschooler’s curiosity to motivate them to learn.

Praise

A good sense of self-esteem is a great motivator for anyone, so it makes sense that providing words of affirmation to young children works just the same. Whenever the young ones do something, even the smallest thing, well, praise them! Provide them with kind words and an enthusiastic attitude. This is guaranteed to lift their spirits and make them feel confident in what they’ve done. This leads to the children wanting to do more to receive that praise and feel good about themselves.

Reduce Technology Use

Technology is a killer of motivation and curiosity, no doubt. If your children are spending a lot of time on iPads or watching tv at home, consider limiting their screen time. This way, they’re motivated to spend their extra time exploring their boredom rather than resulting to a screen. If you’re a teacher and you suspect a child is spending too much time on screens at home, consider setting up a meeting with their parents to discuss this and alternative options to a screen.
