Summer Enrichment Programs McKinney TXStudies have shown that over the summer months, children can lose skills they have learned throughout the school year.  In fact, many students lose about two months of reading skills during their vacation time. By making sure your child has lots of opportunities for reading, you can reduce the potential for summer learning loss. Science projects are a great place to start. By encouraging your child to work on science projects, you can provide opportunities for maintaining reading skills as well as learning new science concepts.

If you are you looking for some cool summer enrichment science activities to reduce learning loss this summer, the following recipes will help. Not only are they lots of fun, but they’ll keep your kids reading and thinking about science, too!

Have your child read the recipes aloud first. Discuss the project and determine whether you have all of the ingredients needed. Gather the ingredients then read through the instructions again before you actually start following them. These steps will give your child lots of opportunities to read the text. If your child is unsure of a word, encourage her or him to use of all of the reading strategies they know to figure out what the text says.
