It might feel like teaching children about germs is difficult when they say, “My hands are clean, I don’t see any germs.” But you must explain this concept to them to help them understand germs, what they mean, and how they affect them.
Teaching the Concept
You don’t have to dumb down the concept of germs for children. Even young children are capable of grasping the idea and what it means. One doctor recommends teaching young children that germs are like bugs that are so small you can’t see them. They get on any and everything. Some can make you sick, which means you have to miss out on school, games, etc. This is a simple way to explain germs to children.
Activities for Teaching Kids About Germs
Here are a couple of activities you can do with children to help them learn about germs.
Glitter Germs
Put glitter on your child’s hands and have them wash with just water. Then do this again but have them wash with soap and water and talk about which one removed more glitter. You can put glitter on your hand too and touch your child’s hand, shoulder, hair, etc., to show them how germs spread.
Everything you Touch
Have the children draw and color multiple germs and then tell them to stick a germ to everything they touch. This shows them how fast and wide germs can spread.
Don’t Overdo It
Teaching children about germs is essential, but it’s also important to be relaxed about the subject. You don’t want children to be fearful of germs, but they need to know what they are and how they can affect them.
