Preschool McKinney TXParents of preschoolers worry through the winter months about keeping their preschool children healthy. During this time year, with so many people staying indoors, there is a higher risk of getting a cold or the flu.

You can reduce the chances of your child becoming ill by following a few simple steps.

Regular Hand Washing

One of the easiest ways to keep your children from getting sick is to teach them how to wash their hands properly. Warm water and soap are essential to remove any germs. Your children should wash their hands after using the washroom, before eating, playing outside, visiting a friend or being at preschool. Check with your preschool director to ensure that the center has a hand washing policy in place.

Trapping Coughs and Sneezes

Teach your children the importance of either using a tissue or the sleeve of a shirt to catch coughs and sneezes. This habit will help them reduce the chances of passing germs on to others. Using a tissue can be a difficult task for a preschooler. Teach your child how to do it properly and how to dispose of the used tissue in a sanitary manner.

Preschool Illness Policy

Speak with the director at your child’s preschool about its policy on illnesses. Check to see whether there is a reasonable policy on keeping sick children at home.

Managing Illnesses

Many children experience several bouts of illness throughout the winter months. You can help your children feel more comfortable by ensuring that they get enough rest. Try to encourage them to sleep as much as possible. When they are awake, limit their activity to allow their bodies to rest. If your child has a cough or a stuffy nose, use a vaporizer or humidifier at night to relieve congestion. Offer your child as much fluid as possible to prevent dehydration. Encourage your child to drink water, juice or electrolyte beverages. To ensure that your child gets enough fluid, offer the drinks in small amounts or through fruits that contain higher levels of juice.

Calling Your Physician

Many illnesses will clear up after a few days. However, some can become more serious. Call your physician if your child is experiencing:

  • Diarrhea
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Facial pain
  • Fever above 103 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Low-grade fever lasting more than three days
  • A sore throat and fever
  • Vomiting
  • Wheezing

TLC

When your children are not well, they need more TLC. Be sure to give them the time, love and care they need to get over their illness. A little effort can go a long way to making them feel better.
